Please reference it for our NTI Plan for Scholars and Parents. It has important information for our NTI Days starting April 6th, 2020. Comments (-1) COVID-19 response Care of Chromebooks Parents/guardians: As a 1:1 school, your scholar will have his Chromebook at home for the next several weeks. Please note that the Chromebook has safeguards here at school on our district network that it might not have at home with your internet service provider (i.e. Windstream, Spectrum, AT&T, or Metronet). Please monitor its use as we are able to track your child's website history and are notified if a scholar is accessing inappropriate sites. Also, please contact your provider if you are unaware of how to set up parental controls on the devices in your home (this could also apply to cell phones as well). We do not have that access or information here at school. To safeguard your family from germs on the Chromebook, please first ring out a Clorox wipe, wipe the surfaces including the screen, keyboard and outer casing, and let dry. DO NOT use a damp cloth or spray anything on the Chromebook -- it will damage the keyboard and electronics inside. Also note that we have a plan in place for damaged or inoperable Chromebooks. Families can drop off their child's device at the Frederick Douglass front desk at 2000 Winchester Road in exchange for a loaner betwee 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. through March 20. This will be the only time to exchange. If your child is missing a charger, you can check out a loaner charger at the FDHS front desk or order a new one online . Instructional options Teachers are working on content-specific online instruction and school work if we need to transition to Non-Traditional Instruction (NTI) days after April 5. We will communicate with you about those days if they should be needed. There are many activities and resources online for your scholar to work on in the next few weeks. Our teachers are updating grades, and any missing work should be made up by March 20. Scholars can continue their work in Khan Academy, Mastery Prep, and/or iXL . Please see instructions for parental access to Canvas or IC . Our middle school scholars are working on their mandatory Digital Citizenship course through Canvas, and our high school scholars will get an email invitation to start their online course through Google Classroom. Please feel free to work with your child through the course; it promotes meaningful dialogue about internet safety and their online presence. Other resources With libraries closed, our FDHS online library resources are just a few clicks away! For news and updates from FCPS, including free meals for students, please visit the district's COVID-19 site . If you are without internet at your home, Spectrum is offering free wifi for 60 days. To enroll in Charter’s free-broadband program, eligible consumers must call (844) 488-8395. The company said it will waive installation fees for new student households. Charter said it will partner with school districts “to ensure local communities are aware of these tools to help students learn remotely.” In addition, the operator will open its Wi-Fi hotspots across its footprint for public use, free of charge. Spectrum also has an offer for low-income families year-round. Thank you for your patience and continued support during this district shutdown. Stay safe and calm during this time. Respectfully, Carter G. Woodson Academy Administration Comments (-1) Gov. Beshear praises innovation at Carter G. Woodson When Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear toured Carter G. Woodson Academy, he commended the all-male school’s creative and innovative approach. “I’m impressed with all the work you’re doing and even more impressed with your students,” he told Rosz Akins, the school’s founder and now dean of students at Woodson. “Watching this grow and what it’s become shows what can happen when you take a good program, a good idea and bring it to life,” Beshear said. “In these classrooms, we have Kentucky’s leaders of the future. Carter G. Woodson shows us that innovation can and should happen in public schools. As a Fayette County graduate, I’m excited to see where we’re going.
